LegalWork is a local-first desktop application published by Eigenwelt Labs, operated by Poensgen Technology UG (haftungsbeschränkt), Berlin, Germany (“Eigenwelt”, “we”, “us”). These Terms govern the official LegalWork builds we distribute (the “App”). By installing or using the App, you agree to them.

The hosted Eigenwelt Plus service has separate Terms & Conditions.

What LegalWork is

LegalWork is free software for legal document review, drafting, recordings, transcription, and related work. The App can not only read but also create and directly edit documents, spreadsheets, and presentations in your workspace, including tracked changes in Word documents. It runs on your computer. You may run local models, connect a model provider with your own API key, or sign in with an Eigenwelt Plus subscription.

Local data and model choices

Documents, prompts, drafts, recordings, and work product remain on your device unless you choose a feature that sends them elsewhere. If you connect a third-party model, selected content is sent to that provider under your agreement with it. You are responsible for choosing providers appropriate for confidentiality, privilege, data protection, and professional duties. Local-model inference does not leave your device.

Two features send content to third parties outside ordinary inference, and neither operates until you explicitly turn it on. Voice Mode requires a connected OpenAI provider and, while in use, continuously transmits microphone audio and an excerpt of the current chat to OpenAI; your agreement with OpenAI governs it. Connected services (MCP connectors and integrations) transmit the content you direct to them to that provider under its own terms. Eigenwelt is not a party to that exchange and the Eigenwelt Plus commitments do not apply to it.

Eigenwelt models through Eigenwelt Plus

The Eigenwelt models are available through an Eigenwelt Plus subscription, set up in the App under “Sign in with Eigenwelt”. The paid service, its included usage allowance, and the free trial are governed by the Eigenwelt Plus Terms. Which models are available to you is decided by an administrator of your firm on the platform.

The paid gateway does not store prompt or output content and keeps only content-free metering data. Our inference providers apply zero data retention by default and do not train on your content. This includes the Gemini models served through Google Cloud (Vertex AI): Google has switched off abuse-monitoring logging for Eigenwelt, so prompts sent to these models are not logged or retained for abuse monitoring either.

Free Eigenwelt models (closed to new users)

The free evaluation gateway is no longer offered to new users; current versions of the App set up an Eigenwelt Plus subscription instead. Where access still exists — for example in older installations or with a device key already issued — the following continues to apply unchanged: this gateway is not zero data retention. Prompts, responses, model, and usage details may be logged. Do not use it with personal, privileged, client, or matter data. The App displays a notice when a free model is active.

The free service is subject to per-device, per-IP, rate, and global limits. Available models, limits, and the free service may change or be withdrawn at any time; no commitment is made to reopening it to new users.

Office add-ins

You can install an add-in that makes LegalWork available inside Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Installing it places the add-in manifest in your Office installation and sets up a locally trusted certificate for the local HTTPS connection over which the add-in talks to the App on your device. Both are removed when you uninstall it. The add-in communicates only with the LegalWork application running locally; no data leaves your device for it to work. Installation may require administrator rights and a restart of the Office applications.

Optional usage analytics

The App can send anonymous, content-free product analytics to PostHog's EU endpoint. You can disable this during setup or later under Settings → Privacy → Share anonymous usage data.

• Analytics may include event names, duration, App version, platform, and model ID.
• Analytics never includes prompts, messages, files, recordings, or work product.

License and output

LegalWork source code is available under the project LICENSE. These Terms govern official builds and do not limit open-source rights. To the extent permitted by law, you retain your rights in your inputs and own generated output. AI output may not be unique.

Acceptable use and professional responsibility

You must use the App lawfully and in line with applicable confidentiality, privilege, supervision, ethical, and data-protection duties. You are responsible for the data you process and must not use the App to violate law or another person's rights.

The recording feature can capture the microphone and system audio, and therefore other participants in a conversation. You are responsible for obtaining the necessary consents and complying with applicable law on recording speech (in Germany, in particular § 201 StGB) and for ensuring a data-protection basis covering the people recorded. The same applies to Voice Mode.

LegalWork assists with legal work but does not provide legal advice. AI output can be incorrect, incomplete, or outdated. A qualified professional must review and verify output, citations, and work product before relying on or sharing it. This applies expressly to changes the agent itself makes to existing files: they must be reviewed before the file is used or shared.

Availability, warranty, and liability

The App is provided “as is” and “as available”. We do not warrant that it will be uninterrupted or error-free, or that output will be accurate or fit for a particular matter.

Nothing limits liability for intent, gross negligence, injury to life, body or health, an expressly assumed guarantee, or liability that cannot be limited by law. For slight negligence, we are liable only for breach of a material contractual obligation and only for foreseeable damage typical of this agreement. Otherwise, liability is excluded to the extent permitted by law.

Changes, law, and contact

We may update these Terms prospectively and will change the date above. These Terms are governed by German law. The courts of Berlin have jurisdiction to the extent permitted by law.
